A fundamental understanding behind why we do what we do based on a framework by Tony Robbins

Why do people crave attention, or seek excessive love? Why do people resort to violence, or overeat? Why do people consume drugs, or choose to take their own lives?

Why do you behave the way you do behave in different situations, around different people? The truth is, there is a reason behind every action you take. Whether you’re consciously aware of the fact or not is really a conversation you need to have with your therapist. After all —

“People act and behave in ways that may seem irrational and inexplicable, even to themselves.” — Tony Robbins

There are millions of stories that uncover the reasons behind why people do what they do — from documentaries that outline the childhood traumas of some of the most notorious serial killers history has known, the stories of politicians laundering millions of dollars of tax payer money, or even finding out your child has been excessively loud in the classroom for the past few weeks.

Tony Robbins was able to create a framework and define these behaviours around fulfilling 6 fundamental human needs — applicable to everyone. Regardless of your socioeconomic status, race, religion, geographical identity and any other factor sociologists have built to differentiate you from the existing 7.8 billion people around the globe, we all share the same needs. Trying to understand why someone in your life (or yourself), is behaving the way they are behaving lately? Understanding the six fundamental human needs will help clear that out.

Based on a framework by Tony Robbins

Certainty

The first human need we all share is certainty. This is a survival mechanism embedded into our genetic code — to the very point of basic function in our daily routine. Recall a situation where you were nervous and uncertain about something in your life; perhaps the last due date for a payment on your mortgage or the life-condition of a loved one. It could be the smallest thing — such as being unsure about whether you’ll find a table at that restaurant you’ve been really wanting…
